/ The Blank Collar / Manifesto

A new
kind of
professional.

For two hundred years, work has been taking life, quietly, completely, generation by generation. AI is the first technology in history that hands the choice back. We refuse to waste the moment.

Vision
Work is for bots.
Life is for humans.

Mission
Turn every worker
into a Blank Collar.

/ Mission
Turn every worker into a Blank Collar.
01 / The Why
The first real invitation in two hundred years.

For two centuries, work defined us. We built our identities around what we did, not who we were. The job became the person. The title became the worth. The hours became the life.

Then the machines learned to do the work.

Most people see this as a threat. We see it as an invitation, the first real invitation in two hundred years to ask a different question. Not "what should I do for a living?" but "what should I live for?"

People gave their best years to processes that could not love them back, and most of them never got the choice. This is the choice, handed back. This is The Blank Collar.

02 / Three eras of work

Built, moved, then made.

Every age of work produced a kind of worker. The intelligence age produces the Blank Collar.

The industrial age

Blue collar

Built the industrial age. They built things by hand.

The information age

White collar

Built the information age. They moved knowledge by mouse.

The intelligence age

Blank collar

Builds the intelligence age. A new kind of professional who works alongside AI agents, directing, orchestrating, judging, and reclaims what is uniquely human. Creativity. Empathy. Taste. Conviction.

03 / The shift
When AI absorbs the process, the human expands.

When the human expands, value compounds. When value compounds, the company that holds the equation outruns the company that does not.

The companies that understand this will not look like the companies of the last era. They will be smaller, sharper, and more human.

Routine output belongs to machines. Humans set intent, frame problems, and decide what is good. The future of work is not work at all, it is craft, contribution, and presence. Everything else is for the bots.

04 / Origin

The Blank Collar was an accident.

New York, 2016. A talk on the future of work. A search for the perfect word, and one misheard vowel.

blackmisheard as →blank

The creative director said "black collar." Kristian heard "blank collar." That misunderstanding turned out to be the right answer. One vowel. One letter. The accident that named the worker the intelligence age would need, coined six years before ChatGPT.

05 / What we believe

Four convictions.

The premises everything else is built on.

01
AI is the largest gift work has ever received.
Not because it does the work for us, but because it gives the work back to the people it should always have belonged to. The few who care. The few who create. The few who can do what no machine can.
02
Most companies will get this wrong.
They will use AI to do more of the same, faster and cheaper. We help the ones who use it to do something new.
03
Routine output belongs to machines.
Humans set intent, frame problems, and decide what is good. That judgment is the work that does not get automated away.
04
The future of work is not work at all.
It is craft, contribution, and presence. Everything else is for the bots.

How a blank
collar works.

Beliefs explain the why. These are the how, the working principles of a Blank Collar, day to day.

P.01Direct, don't do.Set the intent, frame the problem, and judge what is good. The doing is for the bots.
P.02Automate the process. Protect the craft.Hand routine, repeatable work to machines, and keep creativity, empathy, taste, and conviction for yourself.
P.03Vision before data.Vision is the only variable that does not need AI to exist. Decide what the work is for, first.
P.04Strong HX, or nothing ships. The interface between human and machine is the difference between leverage and noise. Weak HX makes everything above it irrelevant.
P.05Use AI to do something new.Not the same thing, faster and cheaper. That is how most companies will get this wrong.
P.06Share what you learn. The next era of work is too important to be the property of any one company. Everything we learn, we publish.
